Does Bible Prophecy Point to the Modern State of Israel?

TODAY the world nervously watches the Middle East. Rocket attacks, clashes of armed militias, and terrorist bombings are frequent occurrences. Add to this explosive mixture the very real possibility that nuclear weapons could be used. No wonder people everywhere are worried!

The world was also anxiously watching the Middle East in May of 1948. At that time, 62 years ago, the British mandate to occupy what was then called Palestine was ending, and war was imminent. The year before, the United Nations had authorized the creation of an independent Jewish State in a portion of the occupied territories. The surrounding Arab nations had vowed to prevent this at any cost. “The partition line shall be nothing but a line of fire and blood,” warned the Arab League.

It was Friday afternoon, May 14, 1948, at 4:00 p.m. The final hours of the British mandate were ticking away. In the Tel Aviv Museum, a small crowd of 350 onlookers were present by secret invitation for an eagerly anticipated announcement

David Ben-Gurion, the leader of Israel’s National Council, read The Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel. It stated, in part: “We, members of the People’s Council, representatives of the Jewish Community of Eretz-Israel by virtue of our natural and historic right and on the strength of the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly, hereby declare the establishment of a Jewish State in Eretz-Israel, to be known as the State of Israel.”

Fulfillment of Bible Prophesy?

Some Evangelical Protestants believe that the modern State of Israel thus fulfilled a Bible prophecy. For example, in the book Jerusalem Countdown, televangelist and mega-church leader John Hagee states: “This momentous occasion had been recorded by the pen of the prophet Isaiah, saying, ‘A nation shall be born in a day.’ (See Isaiah 66:8.) It was the greatest moment in prophetic history of the twentieth century. It was living evidence for all men to see that the God of Israel was alive and well.”

Is that statement true? Did Isaiah 66:8 predict the establishment of the modern State of Israel? Was May 14, 1948, the “greatest moment in prophetic history of the twentieth century”? If the modern State of Israel is still God’s chosen nation, and if he is using it to fulfill Bible prophecies, this would certainly be of interest to Bible students everywhere.

Isaiah’s prophecy states: Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children. (Isaiah 66:8) The verse is clearly foretelling the sudden birth of an entire nation, as if in a single day. But who would cause this birth? The next verse (Is 66:9) gives a clue: “Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the Lord: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God.” God makes it clear that the dramatic birth of the nation would be his doing.

Modern Israel is governed as a secular democracy that officially makes no claim to rely on the God of the Bible. Did the Israelis in 1948 recognize God as the one responsible for their declaration of statehood? They did not. Neither the name of God nor even the word “God” was mentioned anywhere in the original text of the proclamation. The book Great Moments in Jewish History says this of the final text: “Even at 1:00 P.M. when the National Council met, its members could not agree about the wording of the proclamation of statehood. Observant Jews wanted a reference to ‘the God of Israel.’ Secularists balked. Compromising, Ben-Gurion decided that the word ‘Rock’ would appear instead of ‘God.’”

The modern State of Israel to this day bases its claim to statehood on a UN resolution and what it calls the “natural and historic right of the Jewish people”. Is it reasonable to expect that the God of the Bible would perform the greatest prophetic miracle in the 20th century in behalf of a people who refuse to give him credit?

How does Modern Claim To Statehood Compare

Modern Israel’s secular attitude contrasts sharply with the situation in 537 BC. Back then, the nation of Israel was indeed ‘reborn’ as if in a day after being devastated and depopulated by the Babylonians 70 years earlier. At that time, Isaiah 66:8 was strikingly fulfilled when the Persian conqueror of Babylon, Cyrus the Great, authorized the return of the Jews to their homeland. Ezra 1:2.

The Persian King Cyrus recognized God’s hand in the matter in 537 BC, and those who returned to Jerusalem did so for the express purpose of restoring the worship of God and rebuilding his temple. The modern State of Israel has never officially declared any such desire or intention.

Isn't Israel Still God's Chosen Nation and People?

In the year 33 AD, the fleshly nation of Israel lost its claim to be God’s chosen nation when it rejected God’s Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus put it this way: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. ” (Matthew 23:37, 38) Jesus’ statement came true when in 70 AD, Roman legions destroyed Jerusalem along with its temple and priesthood. This also was the genocide of all Hebrew lineage Jews as this occurred during the Passover Sabbaths. But what was to become of God’s purpose for Israel “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.”? Exodus 19:5, 6.

The apostle Peter, himself a fleshly Jew, answered that question in a letter written to Christians. 1Peter 2:7-10: Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, and a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Christians who were selected by the Holy Spirit thus belong to a spiritual nation, their membership not being determined by birth or geographic location. The apostle Paul described the matter this way: “For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature. And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.” Galatians 6:15, 16.

Whereas the modern nation of Israel offers to confer citizenship upon any natural or converted Jew, citizenship in what the Bible calls “the Israel of God” is given only to those who are “elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.” (1 Peter 1:2) Speaking of these members of the Israel of God, or spiritual Jews, Paul wrote: “For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: but he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.” Romans 2:28, 29.

That verse helps us understand a controversial comment Paul made. In his letter to the Romans, Paul explained how the unbelieving natural Jews were like branches of a symbolic olive tree that were lopped off so that “wild” Gentile “branches” could be grafted in. (Romans 11:17-21) Concluding this illustration, he states: “For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob” (Romans 11:25, 26) Was Paul foretelling an eleventh hour mass conversion of the Jews to Christianity? Clearly, no such conversion has taken place.

By the expression “and so all Israel,” and so means in this manner Israel would be saved by individual Jews believing in Jesus Christ. Paul then meant all of spiritual Israel—Christians who have been selected by holy spirit. He was saying that the failure of the natural Jews to accept the Messiah would not thwart God’s purpose to have a spiritual ‘olive tree’ full of productive branches. This is in harmony with Jesus’ own illustration of himself as a vine whose nonproductive branches will be lopped off. Jesus said: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. ”—John 15:1, 2.

Although the establishment of the modern State of Israel was not foretold in the Bible, the establishment of the nation of spiritual Israel certainly was! If you identify and associate with that spiritual nation today, you will reap eternal blessings. Genesis 22:15-18; Galatians 3:8, 9.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I continue to give thanks for all those around the world who are
praying for the Houston, Texas area and for all those affected by Hurricane Harvey. It is of great comfort to
us to know that we are connected to and supported by the larger Body of
Christ.

As we move into the next days, many are beginning to ask how to
help. The city is a mess, there is more to come, and there are
advisories against venturing out onto the roads. Managing water levels
in dams and levees is an unfolding issue. Flooding will continue to
worsen in some areas. The Presbytery expects to be hit hard with calls for help.

Right now, we ask you to donate to the Hurricane Harvey Fund. Please do not attempt to come personally as we do not wish for anyone to put their safety at risk.

We wish to thank Bishop Hill the USA Synod President, Bishop Winslow of the San Francisco Presbytery, and Bishop Rea of the Japan Presbytery for all their help.

In Christ,
Thomas Doyle

Due to the retirement of USA Synod President Bishop Paul Duff, the election of a new synod president was scheduled for Sunday.

Due to Bishop Winston of the San Francisco Presbytery and Bishop Doyle of the Houston Presbytery wishing not to be candidates, Bishop Hill of the Plymouth Presbytery accepted the responsibility. The election committee accepted and confirmed Bishop Hill as president of the USA Synod.

Bishop Hill was born in Lowville, New York in 1964. In 1982, Hill entered Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI and graduated with a MSTh in 1990. Serving as a pastor in various churches in Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts, Hill was elected bishop of the Plymouth Presbytery in 2011 after the split of the Puritan Church from the Congregational and United Church of Christ.

We offer our support and prayers for Bishop Hill.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2146972333403318582.post-28924035468891542332017-07-29T17:07:00.000-04:002017-07-29T17:07:19.027-04:00Kenya Presbytery Established

Jesus’ apostles and early disciples did not celebrate Christmas. The New Catholic Encyclopedia says that “the Nativity feast was instituted no earlier than 243 [C.E.],” more than a century after the last of the apostles died.

Many Christians still celebrate Christmas despite knowing about its pagan roots and lack of support from the Bible. Such persons could ask: Why should Christians take such an unpopular stance? Why make it an issue?

The Bible encourages Christians to think for ourselves, to use our “power of reason.” (Romans 12:1, 2) It teaches us to value the truth. (John 4:23, 24) So while we are interested in how others view us, we adhere to Bible principles even if it means that we become unpopular.

Although Puritans choose not to celebrate Christmas ourselves, we respect each person’s right to decide for himself in this matter. We do not interfere in the Christmas celebrations of others.

Millions of Christians worldwide celebrate Christmas for various reasons. Some enjoy festive times with friends and family. Others think about God or devote time to helping the poor or needy. By themselves, these are undoubtedly worthy deeds. However, they are clouded by the dark side of this holiday.

First, many celebrants believe that Christmas is a birthday celebration for Jesus. However, historians widely concur that the date of his birth is unknown. The Christian Book of Why notes that “the early Christians refused to set aside a date marking Jesus’ birth” because they wanted “to divorce themselves from all pagan practices.” Interestingly, the Bible gives no indication that Jesus ever celebrated his own birthday or anyone else’s. In contrast, he did command his followers to commemorate his death.—Luke 22:19.

Second, many scholars agree that most Christmas traditions have their roots in non-Christian and pagan customs. These include Santa Claus, as well as using mistletoe and the Christmas tree, exchanging gifts, burning candles and Yule logs, hanging decorative wreaths, and caroling. Regarding some of these customs, the book The Externals of the Catholic Church observed: “When we give or receive Christmas gifts, and hang green wreaths in our homes and churches, how many of us know that we are probably observing pagan customs?”

You, though, may wonder what is wrong with following these seemingly innocent customs. Consider this third point as an answer. God does not approve of the blending of pagan customs with pure worship. Through His prophet Amos, God said to His wayward worshippers in ancient Israel: “I hate, I despise your festivals . . . Spare me the din of your songs.”—Amos 5:21, 23.

Why such strong words? Consider what the people of the northern kingdom of ancient Israel were doing. Their first king, Jeroboam, placed golden calves in the cities of Dan and Bethel and induced the people to worship these rather than to worship God properly at the temple in Jerusalem. The king also instituted festivals and appointed priests to help the people celebrate them.—1 Kings 12:26-33.

What those Israelites did was seemingly for a good cause. After all, were they not doing all these things in the name of worshipping God and pleasing him? God’s strong words through Amos and other prophets indicate clearly just how God felt about such practices. Through the prophet Malachi, God said: “I am your God; I do not change.” (Malachi 3:6) Does that not tell us how God feels about the many Christmas celebrations today?

After considering the above facts, millions of people have decided to abstain from celebrating Christmas. Instead, they find joy and true satisfaction in spending time with their friends and family and in helping the poor and needy whenever they wish throughout the year.

As Christians, we are committed to Biblical faith and ethics.
Puritans stand on the authority of Christ and God's Truth in
Scripture as central to our lives.

What the Bible says about marriage is clear, definitive and
unchanging. We affirm biblical, traditional, natural marriage as the
uniting of one man and one woman in covenant commitment for a
lifetime. The Scriptures' teaching on marriage is not negotiable. We
stake our lives upon the Word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

Consequently, we will not accept, nor adhere to, any legal
redefinition of marriage issued by any political or judicial body of
any secular nation or court. We will not recognize same-sex
"marriages", our churches will not host same-sex
ceremonies, and we will not perform such ceremonies.

While we affirm our love for all people, including those
struggling with same-sex attraction, we cannot and will not affirm
the moral acceptability of homosexual behavior or any behavior that
deviates from God's design for marriage. We also believe religious
freedom is at stake within this critical issue – that our first
duty is to love and obey God, not man.

Therefore, we strongly encourage all Christian pastors,
leaders, educators, and churches to openly reject any mandated legal
definition of marriage and to use their influence to affirm God's
design for life and relationships.

We join together with those all over the
world who define marriage as between one man and one woman for life.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

It is with heart filled with gratitude and some sadness that I
tell you I shall
retire as Bishop of the San Francisco Presbytery on July 12, 2015. I shall also resign as US Synod President after the Puritan Church Convocation on July 11.

My decision to retire was not an easy one, because I love you.

I am eternally grateful to God for allowing me the wonderful
opportunity to be with you these past years. My time as bishop has
been filled with the splendor and joy of knowing and serving you. I am also grateful for the 35 years I have been a minister in the Puritan Church. I look with joy as being pastor of Alameda Christian Fellowship in Alameda, CA from July 15.

Thank you Lord, for allowing me to serve you and your people as
Bishop of the San Francisco Presbytery. Thank you for giving me the grace to be US Synod President. It has been a blessing that only you
through God could grant. I am so grateful that you selected me to be your instrument
of grace. You have been so generous with your grace in so many moments
of my life. I trust and pray that I have served your beloved people
with the love you and they have shown me constantly since the first
moment of my arrival as a minister.

of our churches are home churches, some meet in hotels or the
It is a tradition in Buddhist, Shinto, and Hindu homes to have an altar with incense, candles, and statues. These home altars are used to offer daily food and drink to ancestors. This practice must stop in Christian homes. Once one has accepted Christ as Savior then all associated Pagan traditions are to end.

Some
have had images or shrines in their home for years after converting to Christianity. People may see these as merely cultural items, or they may even feel attached to some of these
items. But God is the one who says how He should be worshipped, and the
Bible teaches that He does not want us to use images. (Read Exodus 20:4, 5; Psalm 115:4-8; Isaiah 42:8; 1 John 5:21)

So you can take a stand for true worship by destroying any items you own that are connected with false worship. By all means, come to view them as Christ does—as something “detestable.”—Deuteronomy 27:15.

Ancestor worship also is common in many false religions.
Before learning Bible truth, some believed that the dead are conscious
in an invisible realm and that they can help or harm the living. Perhaps
you used to go to great lengths to appease your dead ancestors. The Pagan dead are in Hell and have no conscious existence anywhere. Thus,
attempts to communicate with them are of no use. Any messages that seem
to come from a dead loved one really originate with the demons.
Therefore, God forbade the Israelites to try to talk with the dead
or to participate in any other form of spiritism.—Read Deuteronomy 18:10-12.

If the use of images or the practice of
ancestor worship was part of your former way of worship, what can you
do? Read and ponder over Bible passages that show you how God views
these things. Pray to Jehovah daily about your desire to take a stand
for true worship, and ask him to help you to think as he does.—Isaiah 55:9.

As the Apostle Paul urges in Romans 12:1:

Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your
bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your
spiritual service of worship.

The year 2014 was filled with many challenges that through the Holy Spirit we were able to weather through.

Our churches threw off the government yoke of 501 (c)3 slavery and ended any and all incorporation. This caused a name change where the Synod voted unanimously through congregations to adopt the name Puritan Church in America.

This caused an immediate reaction from the state boards of incorporation but a review by the 5th US District Court immediately put any questions of our legal standing as a Free Church to rest.

We faced in June the influx of Episcopalian, Lutheran, and Presbyterian congregations joining our fellowships. Our church numbers grew from 27 to over 60. While joyous and a cause for celebration in the Spirit, we found quickly that unresolved issues in those fellowships spilled into all. Quickly the Synod acted to firmly establish order and discipline in all congregations.

It is with much thanksgiving, prayer, and humility that we thank Almighty God for the blessings of the past year. It is with the same we look to 2015. We wish to exhibit these three signs of a Spirit Driven Church.

One, care for the widow and orphans. The first fruits of all collections whether monetary or material belong to the widow and orphan. Each congregation is to care for those within the congregation and those outside in the community. This is a scriptural command we are bound to follow. 2015 shall be the year we in the Synod firmly ask that each congregation does so.

Two, feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, visiting the sick and imprisoned. This again is a scriptural warrant that each congregation is bound in obedience to. As the light of the world we are to show mercy that those who see imitate our example and give glory to God.

Three, stepping outside the church and into the world. We are all individually the church, and the church is not now nor has it ever been buildings. The church is the bride of Christ and not an institution. As such we are called to a public proclamation of Christ in the greater community. It is the hope all congregations will develop and implement a public ministry program. Whether street preaching, sponsoring public improvement projects, or hosting an event at a public park it is the call of each and every Christian to be the public face of faith in Jesus Christ.

Our focus should never be purpose but the Spirit. Our purpose is very clear - give glory to God in all we do. By focusing on the Spirit we live our purpose with support from God and understand that what we do to the least we do to Jesus Christ.

This is our missionary bishop in Nagoya, Japan, Rev. Daniel Rea and his wife Itsuko. If you could possibly go to their church website Christian Church of Japan and in the "Contact Form" ask how you can help them start a homeless day center in Nagoya, Japan it would help many needing people.
